Care and Maintenance for Your Stone Countertops

Stone Care Tips & Maintenance

At Treasure Valley Granite, we believe that beautiful countertops deserve long-lasting care. Whether your surfaces are granite, quartz, marble, or another natural stone, proper maintenance will keep them looking their best for years to come.

Why Stone Care Matters

Stone surfaces are durable, but they’re not invincible. Routine maintenance protects your investment, preserves natural beauty, and prevents long-term damage. We’re here to guide you with easy, practical tips and professional support.

Daily Cleaning & General Maintenance

    • Spills: Blot with a paper towel immediately. Do not wipe the area, doing so will spread the spill. Flush the area with water, and dry it with a soft cloth and repeat the process if necessary.
    • Wipe Surfaces Regularly: Use a soft cloth or sponge with a pH-balanced, non-abrasive cleaner made specifically for stone.
    • Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Steer clear of acidic cleaners (like vinegar or lemon), bleach, ammonia, or abrasive scrubbing pads.

Preventative Stone Care Tips

    • Use Coasters: Especially under glasses, mugs, and bottles to avoid etching and rings.
    • Protect from Heat: Always place trivets or hot pads under pots, pans, and heated appliances.
    • Avoid Scratches: Use cutting boards instead of chopping directly on the surface.
    • Seal Your Stone: Natural stone should be sealed regularly to resist stains and moisture damage. Sealing is a simple yet essential step that helps preserve your stone’s integrity—ask us about professional sealing services.

Do’s and Don’ts for Stone Surfaces

✅ DO’S:

  • Do clean surfaces with mild PH neutral detergent or stone soap
  • Do thoroughly rinse and dry the surface after washing
  • Do blot up spills immediately, sealers help resist stains, but they are not immune to everything.
  • Keep your stone sealed on a regular basis. We recommend re-sealing every 1-2 years for granite. Quartz is not sealed.

🚫 DONT’S:

  • Don’t use vinegar, lemon juice, bathroom, grout, tub, and tile cleaners that have acidic properties on your stone
  • Don’t use abrasive cleaners such as dry or soft cleansers
  • Don’t mix bleach and ammonia; this combination creates a toxic and lethal gas

Please do not attempt to fix a scratch, chip, nick, or stain on your own, doing so may make the problem worse. Please contact a TVG professional to ensure your issue is resolved correctly.
